When I started painting this scroll, I was keen to paint a kingfisher along with 3 fish. I kept communicating with Mr Yap my guide who writes the call it for me. Mr Yap looked at my first 3 fish and said that I need to do two more fish, as 5 is a good number. Since Chinese New Year was coming up, I thought I would indulge his superstitious. I really enjoyed doing these fish this time. I looked at some pictures of fish and painted them. Practice has given me the confidence to study pictures of real goldfish and try and paint them.
The title of the painting is Gold, jade and good luck. The gold comes from goldfish, jade comes from the green of the seaweed. Often a lot is lost in translation while we communicate, ie Mr Yap and I..... But all’s well that ends well.
